The socioeconomic circumstances for many inhabitants of the Caribbean Region of Colombia are not easy, some villages have scarce access to drinking water, food, health and education. This situation has produced an historical pressure on the Tropical Dry Forest (TDF), exploiting and transforming it into one of the most endangered ecosystems of Colombia. This manuscript helps to develop a sustainable model for harvesting the seeds of Olla de Mono (Lecythis minor Jacq.), an important tree species that produces Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFP) in the TDF. Information about L. minor, its biology, distribution, abundance, population structure, phenology, uses, productivity and management is presented in this protocol. The data were gathered during 2020, in the “Montes de María” and “Serranía del Perijá”, and it was enriched using the available literature and additional data from other studies. It was found that the population structure of "Olla de Mono” is highly affected in many localities, where most of the individuals survive as isolated trees in grasslands and farm fences. There is a positive and significant correlation between the size of the trees (DBH and Crown Diameter) and their fruits/seeds productivity. A positive and significant correlation was also found between the fruit size and the number of seeds per fruit. The minimum productive diameter found was an individual with 11,1 cm DBH, and the density of productive trees was 42,32 ± 11,68 trees/Ha in the forest. For grassland the density of trees is lower (~ 5 isolated trees/Ha), and it might vary depending on the management of each farm. Therefore, the annual production of dry nuts should be around 14,37 kg for 1 Ha of TDF, and 1,7 kg for 1 Ha of grasslands in the study sites. Even though the majority of its natural populations and forests have disappeared, L. minor is a resilient species, with a medium - high viability for the sustainable harvesting of its seeds. The species should be propagated and monitored in the harvesting areas, promoting the conservation of the TDF, and the livelihoods of its inhabitants in northern Colombia.
